A paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers
Bleistätter Moor
Bleistätter Moor is a marsh landscape and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Ossiacher See. It is now recognised throughout Europe as an example of successful nature conservation. At around 600 to 650 hectares, it was once one of the largest moorland areas in Carinthia, but was drained for agriculture in the 1930s. After decades of renaturalisation work, large parts were flooded again from 2016. Today, it is a retreat for flora and fauna and offers visitors the opportunity to experience nature through gentle tourism.
Facts about the nature reserve at a glance:
- Extensive protected area: The Tiebel estuary EU protected area now covers around 101 hectares
- Species-rich birdlife: Over 200 bird species can be observed here, including species such as cranes, kingfishers and black storks
- Enormous biodiversity: The wetland is home to over 700 butterfly species, 31 dragonfly species and 14 bat species
- Natural water filter: The sedimentation basins serve as natural filters and improve the water quality of the lake
