Karawanken

Take a deep breath - walk - enjoy. In clear altitude air, with an imposing panorama, on lush mountain meadows. Very close to the sky. The Karawanken belong to the mountain group of the southern Limestone Alps, where the border between Austria and Slovenia has run along the main ridge since 1919. The highest peak is Hochstuhl, followed by Hochobir and Feistritzer Spitz.

In the west, the impressive Mittagskogel dominates at 2145 metres. The craggy rocky walls and big areas of scree of the Karawanken present a magnificent background for the central Carinthian mountain landscape all around Wörthersee, Faaker See, Klagenfurt and Villach.
Large sections of the Carinthian border path lead through beautiful beech and mixed forests. The Mediterranean influence has also created a diversity of flowers that is well-known far beyond the borders.
Some stages lead along very narrow paths and through lesser known areas - chalets and guesthouses are far apart in some places. Hiking and mountaineering in the Karawanken therefore requires fitness and surefootedness.
