Bunker Museum Wurzenpass

Secret for decades during the "Cold War" - now accessible to the public!

At the Carinthian Wurzenpass stands the largest bunker complex of the federal army of the Alpine republic, formerly secret and available for use from 1963 to 2002. Since 2005, the open-air museum unique in Austria has been open to visitors.

The site, the presentation and the visitor guides tell about history. They are guaranteed to make a visit to the museum a lasting experience. As a memorial right by the three-border region of Austria - Slovenia - Italy at the intersection of three cultures, the bunker museum shows impressively what has luckily become superfluous in a peacefully united Europe.

Visitors do not need any prior knowledge: after the start in the info centre, you will discover the 11,400m2 museum site on an individual circuit rich in impressions. It leads through the extensive connecting passageways and in some cases tunnel-like corridors. You reach the seven bunkers (fighting, leadership, catering and protection facilities) and prepared fighting covers in their original condition.

The unique collection also shows all types of cannons, tanks and armoured towers of the former federal fortification and Austrian troops from 1955.

The Bunker Museum is situated by the Wurzenpass federal road B109 about 2.5km before the Slovenian border (A2 exit Villach/Warmbad). It is open daily in July and August and in May, June, September and October from 10.00 to 18.00.
