The Villach Alpine Road

16.5 km of stunning views and adventure

It is up to you whether you choose two wheels or four wheels to travel up the Dobratsch mountain on the Villach Alpine Road. Either way you will have an enjoyable trip with many stopping places and impressive views. From the departure point Villach- Möltschach, the road will take you to 1,732 meters above sea level to the ‘Rosstratten’ – the starting point for hikes and exploration tours.

You can take your own car, motorcycle or, if you are very sporty, you can ride your bicycle up this wonderful mountain road. If you prefer to take public transport, the shuttle bus will allow you to enjoy the alpine road and the nature park. The Dobratsch Nature Park shuttle bus runs several times a week at varying times.

There are 11 viewing points and stopping places along the 16.5 km long route. The first stop is ‘Arena View’ from which you can see the ski jump and the modern Nordic Sports centre. The next stopping point, (P1) is the ‘Aussichtsrast‘, a scenic resting place at 700 m above sea level. This is followed by Carpark 2, ‘City and Lakes Panorama’. From here you can enjoy a lovely view over Villach and the surrounding lakes and mountain landscape.

After a further 100 m above sea level you will get to the stopping place P3, ‘Waldrast’, an idyllic stopping point from which to view the ruins of Castle Finkenstein. At carpark P4, ‘Schüttblick‘, you can see the imposing mountain landslide area ‘Schütt’ caused by the earthquake of 1348. In addition, you can enjoy the unimpeded view of the Julian Alps and some of the peaks of the Karawanken Range. Carpark P5 is an absolute highlight with its stunning view of the meeting point of three countries: Austria, Italy and Slovenia.

The next stop, carpark P6 is the ‘Alpine Garden’. In an area of approximately 10,000 m2 over 800 different alpine plans from three different climate zones are cared for by a team of volunteers. The Alpine Garden is open from the beginning of June to the end of August, from 09:00 – 18:00! (Entrance fee). From the viewing platform ‘Dobratsch Skywalk‘, you can experience the unparalleled appearance of the Dobratsch, which has been shaped by powerful rock falls. You can also enjoy the phenomenal view down into the ‘Red Wall’. The skywalk is a seven-meter free-standing metal platform providing breath-taking views.

Once you have arrived at the mountain inn Aichingerhütte you are at 1,650 m altitude. Here you will find an exhibition of the marvellous world of the birds of the Dobratsch, with many interactive stations, a real adventure for children. The final stop of the Villach Alpine Road is at 1,732 meters on the ‘Rosstratten’. Children can play at the adventure play-ground, adults will enjoy both the sun terrace of the Rosstratten Hut and its local cuisine. From here you can walk to the ‘Gams- und Gipfelblick’ ‘chamois and summit viewing platform’ and the peak of the Dobratsch at 2,167 m above sea level. The Villach Alpine Road is open for traffic all year round.
